Terrorism: learning from our mistakes

Mumbai reels again! the pain of innocent victims of these terror attacks is very fresh. and yet we seem to be making the same mistakes as earlier. One should realize that objective of this attack was not only to spread terror but to hurt India economically too. All our politicians have done far is to implicate Pakistan and put pressure on them to act on these terror outfits. Is Pakistan's actions reliable ?How can a country which harbours india's most wanted terrorrist for long including those accused of 93, Mumbai blasts be expected to cooperate and eliminate terror from its bosom. A proactive stance to wipe out terror breeding ground whether inside the country or outside needs to be adopted. We need to understand that there are terror elements within thecountry too and a strong anti-terror law needs to be there. however considering our previous experiences with TADA it needs to have sufficints safegurds to prevent it from being misused. We need to surgically target terro...

Barack Who???

today morning my driver stefen greeted me by saying "Obama won!" The smile on his face immediately caught on my face too and i wished him congratulations. Apparantly he had not slept the entire night and was watching the campaign coverage. though i had expected this but this was still incredible. He lost the senate race in 2000 and won for the first time in 2004 and within 2-3 years was standing for presidency and what.... he won it! Like most ordinary mortals of the world, I could not help being enamoured by the american Presidential election. Its such an elaborate and expensive affair ( $2 bn estimated this time around)! First you got to get through the primary ( and that can be daunting if you have hillary as your opponent) and then you seek your major opponent stretching almost 2 years. However the quality of debates is astounding and decent. I try to compare any debate in our parliament (leave alone some old timers like vajpayee etc) and realization of the hopelessness...

an inconvenient truth

Image
is it any surprise that global warming hardly finds a mention in the great American Presidential debates. A country that refuses to sign the Kyoto protocol under the pretext that it will harm its economic interests is at last hearing from some of its own people an "inconvenient truth" as Al gore would put it. Just watched this documentary and must say it is quite horrifying. Global warming due to GHG emissions is a clear and present danger. We may not realize but it is already impacting us in a big way. Every time you feel the weather is becoming hotter by the day, GHG are at work. Every time you or your family members fall sick more often, chances are their imune systems are not able to acclimatize to the rapidly changing climate. Every time the food prices rise, chances are desertification due to global warming is playing a hidden role. the melting glaciers. ...

some funny moments

Nigerians are fun loving people. they enjoy music and dance. I had the oppoertunity to attend one of their wedding and their appetite for dance just amazes me. If you go to one of their nightclubs , the way nigerian gyrate their bodies would put shakira to shame. **However the english they speak is called "pigeon english" & an expat like me has trouble understanding it at time. take a sample: "Sir, you should not travel via the lagos --benin way as there are smal -glass on the way" well it took me three hearing to understand he was referrring to smugglers. **I was expecting my Unit Head to accompany me to a marriage of one of our colleague. I was going through some docs when he entered my office and said "Do you like fat women?" i thought he was joking so i said "yeah" well then before i knew he ushered in a fat girl giggling all the way through. Needless to say i was speechless. I gathered my wits to ask him who she was. well it turned out ...

My experience of Chinese Cuisine

I am a connosieur of sea-food and they are the first ones i try in a new restaurant. however I am no fan of chinese cuisine ...at least till very recently.. Tulips ..well that's the name of the restaurant recently opened in Zaria. Luckily its very close to where I stay. They have tried well with a bakery, pool table, bar and cyber cafe all available. the ambience is good and thankfully provides some refreshing change to my monotonous schedule. The fried shrimps ---well it actually contains the whole unpeeled shrimps( including the tail and legs) as if caught straight from the sea and then fried ..not to mention the red chillies..but the effort of eating is worth it and and in the end you only complain of the quantity. the stewed prawn--- u get a shock when its served..its a king size with just one prawn in its full regalia( the upper coat and tail ) served in a stew of red tomatoes. well the taste is disenchanting ...i guess the smaller ones are always more tastier. the stewed...

Understanding the "Gita"

Though I am not very religious but I am spiritual. From what I have read and understood best so far is: A human being can be in his most dynamic (flourishing state) if he lives by his Dharma. Dharma means to be best at what he is meant for. Just as it is dharma of water to flow & of fire to burn , similarly it is dharma of khstriya to fight. Our repressed feelings and emotions need an outlet before we can assume our dharma. It surprises me that the logic behind the everlasting soul is the “theory of re-incarnation”. How then do you justify the fact that the human population is constantly increasing unless you believe in splitting of souls or you believe that non-living matter too is genesis of life (soul) Which brings to the view that that rock, water or air is the same thing as life. I would really welcome all views on this topic…. Yoga:

you have to forgive to be free: Nelson Mandela

I was watching this movie titled "catch a fire" set in the apartheid pariod of South Africa. Its about how a white police officer wrongly suspects an innocent black man (Patric) to be a terrorist and ruins his life. He tortures not only him but also his wife. The trauma inflicted compells him to become one after his release. After five years apartheid ends. Patric loses everything after becoming a terrorist including his wife. Three years after apartheid, destiny makes him meet that police officer again who is now retired. Its not difficult to imagine why he is dying to take revenge. But something changed and he remembered what Nelson Mandela had said "you have to forgive to be actually free" Revenge would not have freed him of his mental agony, but forgiveness can. Nothing could have made the black's coexist with the white' s after apartheid, but for this clear understanding.

TATA, tune kar diya kamaal!!!!!!!!!!!

Who would have thought that Ratan TATA was serious when he was talking abt that 1 lakh car. with rising inflation and consumer's ever increasing demands , it seemed a nearly impossible car. At best one would have thought of a shoddy looking box with four wheels which would serve as mode of transportation for 4 people. I have not seen the car with my own eyes but from the pic, it looks a very stylish, compact car and certainly does not look cheap but it is cheap...2500$. that's it!! Even my driver Stefen in Nigeria is all gaga about it . He is waiting before they start exporting it. If successful, it has to be one of the most remarkable piece of engineering in recent times. It could prove to be the model T for indian masses !! one only hopes the doors dont start creaking after a fortnight or the engine starts puffing!! not to talk of pollution but TATA claims it caters to european standards! Honestly, with rising congestion in metros specilly in places like Kolkata if most ...
